January 19-20, 2019

Building a strong pastel painting

(All levels)


In this workshop we will cover key principles of composition, cropping and editing to bring out your subject, and how to effectively build your image from a sketch to a finished pastel painting.  Group discussion and a  pastel demonstration will guide you through all the important stages of building your pastel and will include:


  • How to choose an effective colour palette
  • Creating a value map to guide your colour application
  • How to work with the pastel wet and dry
  • How to build a strong underpainting
  • How to simplify the details 
  • Strategies in when to use hard and soft pastels- how to layer pastel


​Each workshop includes handouts, demonstrations, individual tutoring to deal with your specific needs and goals, group discussion and a final critique. Exercise are designed to develop new skills and challenge our approach to working (materials not included). Each class is limited to 14 people. 



February ​23-24, 2019

Bringing out your Focal Point - colour strategies

(All levels)


Simplify your subject, find your focus, and create impact with your painting.


In this workshop students, will learn how to effectively plan their ideas in the early stages and develop strategies for using colour and pastel application to bring out their focal point. The lessons in this workshop are designed to give voice to your work; allowing you to go beyond the photo you’ve chosen and paint with expression. Group discussion and a pastel demonstration and will guide you through all the important stages of building your pastel and will include:

  • How to identify and bring out your focal point
  • How to choose a simplified palette and learn why this is so effective
  • Understanding and effectively using colour temperature 
  • Strategies in colour contrast 
  • Strategies in colour application
  • Using power colours to add expression and atmosphere to your work


​Each workshop includes handouts, demonstrations, individual tutoring to deal with your specific needs and goals, group discussion and a final critique. Exercise are designed to develop new skills and challenge our approach to working (materials not included). Each class is limited to 14 people. ​



April 27-28, 2019
Put Colour and light into your pastels

​(all levels)

Fill your pastel paintings with colour and light.


In this workshop, we learn to make sense of the colours in our palette and use them to build pastel work that is fresh and bright, not muddy and over worked. Begin to understand your light source so you can make creative decision that pay attention to colour harmony and balance, while infusing energy and atmosphere into your work. Group discussion and a pastel demonstration will guide you through all the important stages of building your pastel and will include:

  • Understanding colour and value
  • Simplified palettes
  • Using broken colour
  • Putting colour harmony and balance into your work
  • Understanding and using reflected light



The workshop includes handouts, demonstrations, exercises, individual tutoring to deal with your specific needs and goals, group discussion and a final critique. Exercise are designed to develop new skills and challenge our approach to working. Materials are not included. Each class is limited to 14 people.

Cancellation policy

If you cancel your registration 30 days before the class start date you will receive a full refund (less $50 processing fee). Less than 30 days before start date there are normally no refunds.  

Jessica reserves the right to cancel any class that is under-subscribed and, in such a case, guarantees a full refund of tuition. Jessica is not responsible for travel expenses.
